Excellent resource for students who are struggling to identify an American characteristic for their project or for those who have chosen a characteristic but are having trouble defending it. 

Downs, Hugh. (2002). My America: What my country means to me by 150 Americans from all walks of life. New York: Scribner. Print.

This book gets to the heart of the matter answering the question "What is an American?" after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.  Contributors range from average citizens to politicians and celebrities. 

Minks, Louise and Benton. (1992). America at War: The Revolutionary War. New York : Facts on File. Print.

This book describes the causes of the Revolutionary War as well as distinguished figures of the time.  It also describes major battles and includes pictures and maps to aid in comprehension.

Smith, Carter. (1991). The Revolutionary War : a sourcebook on colonial America. Brookfield, CT : Millbrook. Print.

This book "describes and illustrates the historical, political, military, social, and cultural aspects of the Revolutionary War through a variety of images created during that period."  It includes bibliographical references as well as an index and is a useful source for high school students.  It contains maps and illustrations.

"Examines the life of the influential political writer whose pamphlet 'Common Sense' became one of the basic tracts of the American Revolution."  This book is illustrated and offers bibliographical references and an index.

This biography details the life of famous orator Patrick Henry.  It includes an index and bibliography.
